Fundstrats Mark Newton reads the consumer stocks as a warning the headlines are missing. Cruise liners, booking agencies, casinos, most of consumer discretionary has gone nowhere all year despite what spending data suggests. Against that backdrop, and a debt load he calls tremendous, he sees hiking into a fragile economy as the wrong move. His case rests on where the inflation is coming from: crude is up on supply, not demand, and he expects it to fall once the strait situation resolves.
